Prior to filming our trailer it very important that we conduct an accurate level of research. My main focus of research is the use of Makeup and costume, these play vital parts in making sure the trailer looks as true to its form as possible. Our chosen sub-genre is psychological so it is key that this reflects through our characters make up and costume along with props. On this page you will find parts of my research i have conducted along with the profiles of the characters for our movie trailer.
Psychological Horror:
As this sub genre heavily relies on the characters belief, guilt and fear; make up does not always tend to be a key factor, however it is still relevant. Costume plays a very big part in forming the trailer.
Real Media Inspiration
In 'The Shining' the antagonist 'Johnny' was seen in casual clothing. This is very common among the psychological horror movies that i researched in accordance for this task. The NVC of this character, Johnny, was very important in terms of how he is perceived by the audience. However his face seemed rather pale and worn out this could be to go with his crazy persona.
In the trailer for this movie you can see the antagonist with very minimal make up. However it is clear to tell that he has a psychological problem just from his non verbal contact.

'The Exorcist' poster gave great inspiration to the costume of the antagonist . In the poster of the exorcist a silhouette of the doctor is seen standing it what looks like a suit along with a smart hat and doctors hat. This inspired the choice of Dr Klitschko's costume orginataed
During the trailer to The Exorcist movie there are no 'gory' make ups and the real thrill of the trailer is dependent on what is going on and the story line.

Antagonist:
The Antagonist, Dr Klitschko, is to be played by Tom
This is the character that is known as the 'Bad Guy'. This character is typically seen to be the mastermind behind significant plots in the movie. Our protagonist is going to be played by Tomas he will be seen as a doctor/father figure of a cult/new formed belief. Because of this the costume decided for the antagonist was smart wear, this is because the 'villains' are often thought of as being smart along with cunning. The suit conveys a smug look unlike regular doctors our antagonist will be dressed scruffy rather than clean cut. Below is a moodboard created to show the outfit of the character.
Make Up
As a group we decided that it would be best if the actor had a significant scar just below the eye. This decision was made because the sub genre of our trailer is psychological, and the fact that there is not much gory make up throughout this sub genre however the scar connotes that the character may have a violent past and carry meaning to it and will be a memorable symbol of the movie its self.
When we decided what we was going for with the make up on our antagonist I researched and found this video. This video is what i used as an inspiration to assist me in creating the scar.
above is three simple steps to achieve the scar that we used for our antagonist.
Final Girl:
The Final girl, Suzanne, will be played by Lasharn
This character is known to be the last girl standing. Usually the last one to confront the antagonist and is the one who is left to tell the story. As our sub genre is psychological it does not involve much gory make up and injuries like a slasher it rather plays tricks on your mind. In spite of this the Last girl will be dressed in casual clothing and regular everyday make up. Below is a moodboard created to show the outfit of the character.
Princess
This is the 'princess/ scream girl' which is played by Kloe.
This is the character that typically gets killed first in the movie. Playing her will be Kloe this character is usually blonde and a girly girly. Due to this Kloe's costume consisted of her having to dress up in a dress however her footwear is trainers this is to convey the background of the movie as it is set in a rural London area the trainers give it an urban feel.
Make Up
As our sub genre is psychological it was important that we keep the make up realistic as it is a genre that is meant to play with your mind and not necessarily scare you with imagery. Because of this we chose the last girl to have normal everyday make up with the exception of blood on her wrist and neck to show that she has been a victim of violence (last girl). Below is the video where inspiration was gathered.
Both the final girl and the princess' make up was inspired by this video, we wanted the make up for these characters to be a realistic as it could be. In order to support our sub-genre which was psychological which is known for playing on realism. The choice to do this is also so the audience can relate more to these characters as they see them looking like ordinary people.
Supporting Cast
The photos above are of the cast who play the extras. These cast are seen in short parts of the trailer and do not have any dialogue or solo scenes. The costume for these cast members are casual and there make up remains the same, a usual everyday look. weather these characters survive or get away is not shown in this trailer this is done to entice the audience to watch the full movie and find out.
supporting female cast wore casual clothing. a typical south London girl attire as this will help bring in the target and secondary audience. The males are also wearing casual clothing throughout the trailer. This is to fit the realism of the trailer, we want the trailer to be quite true to life which is what we expect to scare the audience.
